Friday Five2

A quick *wave* and hello as I zoom through the afternoon. The full-time job is busy; SEO writing is busy (because payment issues from the full-time job…grr…glad to have a fallback plan but it really sucks for those who don’t). So there are these things:

  • Jeanette LeBlanc wrote a love letter to writers and my response is *makes flirty eyes*
  • I love libraries for all these reasons (and more) and agree that articles (all articles, really) should be written by someone who knows what they’re talking about and also maybe a more thorough job by an editor would have caught that as well but I digress. Yay, libraries!
  • I love Hännah Ettinger’s writing, and this piece took my breath away.
  • I have never in my life been this excited about a graphic novel – Pamela Ribon’s SLAM!
  • I love this NYT article about the joy of missing out (or for those who like acronyms, JOMO – “FOMO’s benevolent younger cousin.”).

Not Friday Five

My most recent newsletter (click to subscribe) outlines a little bit about my reasons for being quiet around these parts lately. I’m restructuring some priorities, to put it mildly.

It’s no wonder then that the links in my inbox that catch my eye talk about change and restlessness and anxiety (also, that’s just pretty much the nature of my inbox in general, but I digress).

The words that have resonated recently:

  1. What if the work we see to do isn’t a burden but the way we were meant to be in the world? What If by Austin Channing Brown.
  2. Jenny Lawson is one of my favorite people on the planet. This post makes me out-of-my-mind happy. I want this so bad for her (and the rest of us).
  3. Maybe you’re going through (or thinking about initiating) a major life change. Adjustment disorder is not so rare. Consider talking to someone about it.
  4. The only business plan that matters? Keep going – from Over the Rhine.
  5. Wil Gafney’s sermon on Michal is exactly what I needed to hear. Maybe you do, too.

24in48 is coming up next weekend, so I’ll see you again then, if not before. I hope you’ve had a great weekend!

Friday Five 4

It’s National Donut Day, so that tells you everything you need to know about how my ability to focus is going to go this afternoon. Here are some things from the intrawebs I loved this week.

  1. I think I want Reimagining the Ignatian Examen. Examen is part of my nightly ritual, and I am interested in Thibodeaux’s perspective on it.
  2. “That’s the thing with my important life moments, they always seem to emerge slowly, like a Polaroid picture. I suspect few people have instant-capture aha moments. Especially those of us ensconced in the nebulous realm of anxiety where discernible lines between normal and neurotic cease, at some point, to exist.” I love this excerpt by Sarah Wilson, and I think I’m going to like the book.
  3. “We ask for wild dreams, for places to be our fullest selves, for the courage to walk outside of our fears and expectations of who we are, moving always towards what lies ahead. We keep going even when we can’t quite see the road.” From Ask Relentlessly by Hilary Yancey.
  4. I love this idea! Jen Hatmaker’s recap of the ceremony where graduating seniors honored their teachers. I defy you to read some of the things they said and not get a little teary. Then write a note to your favorite teacher.
  5. Literary quotes celebrating friendship from Book Riot. My favorites –
“I knew when I met you an adventure was going to happen.” —A.A. Milne, Winnie-the-Pooh
“Not a word passes between us, not because we have nothing to say, but because we don’t have to say anything.” —Khaled Hosseini, The Kite Runner

I’m looking forward to a weekend at the farm with the folks. Hope your weekend is relaxing, too!

Friday Five3

At UNT, it’s close-down day and graduation day and block party and we’re tired. So here are some comforting things from the internet. I know I need them. Do you?

  1. Joy the Baker’s strawberry pie bars. These sound delicious. I bet you could make them with blueberries, too.
  2. RED PANDAS ARE THE CUTEST.
  3. Long-suffering animal moms.
  4. Bookshop with a coffee shop and a piano. Pretty much what I imagine Heaven looks like.
  5. And finally – the way I would like any pun delivered to me. Via Husky:6.26.16-Bad-Pun-Husky4

Hope you’re having a good day!

Friday Five 4

Drive-by posting after a long week. Here are some fun things from the intrawebs this week:

  1. 50 Mums, 50 Kids, 1 Extra Chromosome. I defy you to watch this and not get sniffly.
  2. Save your mascara wands to save wildlife. There’s an address at the end of the video.
  3. The music lessons your parents forced you to take did good things for you. The thing missing from this list? They gave you music.
  4. I have long been skeptical about microwaved mug brownies. Leigh Kramer proved me wrong. This brownie is awesome.
  5. And I know it’s not for a while, but APRIL 5 IS NATIONAL CARAMEL DAY AND BETH MARIE’S IS DOING A THING.

This weekend, I’m going to rest and read and probably watch The Wire. Have a good weekend, everyone!

Friday Five3

YAY IT’S FRIDAY! And not just any Friday but the Friday before Spring Break, which means that (while we don’t get a full week off) even staff still get a three-day weekend. I’m taking full advantage of the free Monday to go to the goth club for old school night on Sunday.

Today’s list is a rich collection of things I’m excited to see and make and do and think about.

  1. UNT (and SFT, the building where I used to work) alum Bola Ogun’s short “Are We Good Parents?” is at SXSW. It was awesome to read her interview here.
  2. Lin-Manuel Miranda is a delight. I love watching him watch Weird Al’s Hamilton polka. I am also very excited about Mary Poppins Returns!
  3. That embarrassing moment when your dentist calls you out on the internet for breaking your retainer, followed closely by the amazing moment the person you broke it over offers to pay for it.
  4. Some reminders that I needed that self-awareness is harder work than it seems and that there is a way to get news that does not break your soul.
  5. Have I mentioned (this month) how much I love Joy the Baker? Her weekly Let it be Sunday! posts are gems. This week’s post has me craving parmesan pecorino biscuits.

Happy Friday, everyone! Hope your day has been great and your weekend is even greater!

Friday Five3

I started off the week with a fever (even though that seems like 42 days ago), and it didn’t get a lot easier from there. I think it might have been a rough week for a lot of people. So here’s a little rough with a lot of levity.

  1. I went through every damn emotion reading Rachel Denhollander’s testimony. Be advised – it’s super intense.
  2. This post is sad in that their dogs passed, but I want to give this company all my money, which doesn’t make sense because I have no pets. Who has a pet I can buy stuff for?
  3. Up until this moment in time, Pun Husky was my favorite famous husky. Now this little nugget gives P.H. a run for his/her money.
  4. I have a hard time picking my favorite animal re-names. I’m torn between Judgmental Tree Frog and Regular Boring Normal Turtle.
  5. Jason Momoa is joy personified.

This weekend, you’ll be hearing a lot from me as I embark on my second 24in48 Readathon. It’s not too late to join (in your own house).

Friday Five3

Since our last Friday Five, I have been intrigued by people doing things right. Some of them are serious and some less so, but either way, we don’t always hear these stories, so I thought I’d share. Enjoy!

  1. The geniuses at Girlxoxo are my heroes. Here is a master list of reading challenges for the year. Click on that, and come back. Are you back? Did you see?!?!?! I KNOW, RIGHT?!?! This is the best.
  2. I imagine that there are several issues on which Sarah Silverman and I would disagree, but this is absolutely the nicest way I’ve ever heard of handling someone who called you something terrible.
  3. A compilation of writing advice from 27 successful writers.  I particularly enjoy James Altucher’s advice to drink coffee + read and read and read + write and John Avlon’s description of writing for the ear.
  4. Danielle Henderson via Shondaland teaches us how to gym for non-gym people. *raises hand*
  5. How to apologize, the master class. The podcast linked within the article is long-ish (well, not for a podcast, I guess, but I’m having attention span issues today) but worth the listen.

Friday Five2

I spent today shopping for future book club books and completing my meal planning, budget, and writing calendars for January, so I am prepped and ready for the new year. I will complete the obligatory year-in-review post on Sunday, but I’m looking forward to the year ahead. Here are some things that resonate with my 2017 and some things I’m excited about in 2018.

  1. I LOOOOVE this piece by Jess Zimmerman on Catapult on claiming your complexity. This sums up a lot of what I have journaled secretly in this year of wild. I’m still picking apart what to let loose and what to keep, if not hidden, then at least secluded.
  2. My favorite food author this year (and easily top five every other year I’ve been reading her) is Joy Wilson. I haven’t done as much cooking this year as in the past (my kitchen and I haven’t quite meshed yet. We have issues.), but her writing has made me remember that I do love it and will find my groove and get back to it someday. I love her blog. I loved both Over Easy (coffee, breakfast, and cocktails) and Homemade Decadence (soooo many desserts – it almost has me convinced I can make a cake and not screw it up).
  3. Modern Mrs. Darcy has her reading challenge for 2018 posted! Yay!
  4. So does Book Riot! Yay!
  5. And the thing I am looking forward to the most next month? The 24in48 Readathon! Good time to get a jump start on those reading challenges. Sign-ups are open. Let me know if you sign up so we can read together. I mean, not together. Separately in our own houses. But at the same time.

What are you looking forward to in the next month?
