Part of the “currently reading” pile that isn’t strictly current
I often say that I read four or five books at a time, and that’s true. I usually have at least one fiction, one nonfiction, one audiobook, one ebook, and one book that falls into the category of “light reading” for when all the others I’m reading are too intense for my current mood (a common occurrence with me as I often choose things that lean a little heavy).
I also have a lot of books I’ve started and not finished. I eventually do finish them, but sometimes it literally takes years. So this month, I’m going to go back through my trusty Goodreads list that says I’m currently reading 40+ books (lol no) and try to finish the ones I still care about finishing and let the ones I don’t go.
The priority for my monthly reading agenda is always what I’m reading for book clubs:
The Wives by Tarryn Fisher (finished)
Dreaming the Eagle by Manda Scott
“Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?” and Other Conversations About Race by Bevery Daniel Tatum, PhD
How To Be an Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi
I usually finish book club selections, but not always. Some months are really slow reading months for me.
Several books due back at the library soon (many part of that started-but-not-quite-finished Goodreads list):
When We Left Cuba by Chanel Cleeton
The Downstairs Girl by Stacey Lee
Big Summer by Jennifer Weiner
Climbing the Mango Trees by Madhur Jaffrey
So…suffice it to say I’m not going to run out of books to choose from.
What are you reading, or what have you read lately that you recommend?
Nice list, and a worthy goal to revisit those *marked* as incomplete. 8^)
I am currently reading “The No Asshole Rule” for a book club at my office, “A Rare Vintage” by a writer I met briefly in 2018, “The Institute” by Stephen King, “Dad’s Tweed Coat” by my friend Jim Reed (owner of what I call a magnificent bookshop, only by reductionist language), and I recently finished “Start With Why” by Simon Sinek, and “Midnight Sun”, which is the first of the Twilight series books that I made it all the way though.
I shudder to think how many books I probably have on my “want to read” list, and even more so, my “current” reading list. That seems like a September goal I should like to pursue as well: identifying, finishing, or releasing some of them. Let’s be realistic about September, though… it’s a 2020 goal. I’ll aim for the end of the year, any new books I may acquire before then notwithstanding. ๐
Ooh – haven’t read any of those. I may have to check them out. Thanks for sharing them!
About half of the things I read I start and finish within a few days, but the other half end up getting pushed aside or postponed, particularly if something new and shiny comes along or I’m on a time crunch for book club.
I can relate to the new and shiny part! I often slow down on my already-books when my wife tells me how much she is enjoying something new she has picked up. This is how I ended up in Midnight Sun and The Institute! She reads them in a handful of days, like you do, and I typically finish them in 2-3 weeks once engaged (though less if I can’t sleep one night). I, too, love to have a few different items in progress, depending on my mood and the weight of the material. Those current four are NF, ebook, fiction, and light reading, respectively. ๐
